About UPS & Our Culture
Every method a UPS driver uses — every step, every hand movement, every mirror check — was designed by an Industrial Engineer. At UPS, industrial engineering is not a support function. It is the core operational science that built one of the most efficient delivery networks in human history. Our Industrial Engineers analyze time and motion data, design work methods, engineer route structures using the ORION algorithm, and develop the performance standards that every operational metric in the company is measured against. If you are searching for industrial engineer jobs near me in a real-world application environment where your methods affect 500,000 employees daily and your route optimization work saves the company millions of dollars per year in fuel and labor costs, the UPS Industrial Engineering career is the most impactful IE role in the logistics industry.
What Our Team Says (Employee Reviews)
"Industrial engineering at UPS is applied IE at a scale most engineers never experience. I ran a time study last quarter on our twilight sort unload function, identified a 12-second per-trailer reduction in door-to-door positioning time through a dock door sequencing change, and the compound savings across 400 daily trailers was $280,000 annually at our hub alone. My IE degree is doing exactly what it was designed to do here. The salary is competitive, the scope of impact is enormous, and the career path into operations research and senior network engineering at UPS moves fast for engineers who produce results." - Current Industrial Engineer, Spokane, WA.
Role Overview & Responsibilities
As a UPS Industrial Engineer, you apply industrial engineering methods — time study, methods analysis, process flow design, and data modeling — to optimize the operational performance of assigned package center or hub facilities, reducing per-unit labor cost and improving service quality through evidence-based operational redesign projects.
- Time Study & Methods Analysis: Conduct formal time studies on sort floor functions using UPS's elemental time data system and direct observation timing — measuring actual method execution times against the engineered standard time for each work element, identifying method deviations that generate above-standard time consumption, and designing corrective method changes that restore the functional area to engineered standard without increasing injury risk or reducing sort accuracy.
- ORION Route Optimization Support: Support ORION (On-Road Integrated Optimization and Navigation) route engineering for the assigned package center — analyzing daily route data, identifying chronic over-allowed or under-allowed routes using the UPS Business Intelligence reporting suite, and recommending route boundary adjustments, stop sequence modifications, or driver method corrections that reduce total on-road time and fuel consumption across the center's route portfolio.
- Facility Layout & Flow Design: Apply industrial engineering space planning and material flow analysis to sort floor layout optimization projects — modeling package flow paths, conveyor utilization rates, and chute capacity constraints using AutoCAD plant layout drawings and discrete event simulation tools to identify layout modifications that increase facility throughput per square foot without capital construction expenditure.
Benefits & Perks
UPS Industrial Engineers receive a competitive salary reflecting the BSIE degree requirement, full medical, dental, and vision benefits, a 401(k) with company match, paid vacation, and access to UPS's engineering career development program including IIE membership support and PE examination preparation assistance. The scale and diversity of IE application at UPS creates advancement opportunities into senior network engineering, operations research, and supply chain design leadership roles that most logistics employers cannot offer.
